These are violet Nd laser garnets (Nd:YAG) cut into various calibrated shapes: rounds
When alexandrite crystals are grown the top region is less pure and often has some bubbles which require it to be removed before they cut the rest of the crystal into laser rods
though they aren't very visible in the hand (the macro lens is very unforgiving)
resulting in hollow needles and carbon clusters which ruined them for semiconductor usage but left enough clean zones (after extensive trimming) to facet brilliant gems
