The album was partially inspired by the 2018 death of Bjrk's mother, Hildur Rna Hauksdttir, particularly the songs "Sorrowful Soil" and "Ancestress". The album features contributions from American singer Serpentwithfeet, Bjrk's two children Sindri and sadra, Indonesian dance duo Gabber Modus Operandi, and a bass clarinet sextet.
