It sits on a horseshoe shaped base. The toe of the horseshoe is stamped "Elkington & Co" and has Elkington's trademark stamps. There is a peaked riding hat or jockey's cap at the front which would hold salt. Behind this there are two removable silver plated boots. One has a pierced screw top this would have held pepper.
