The handles are hallmarked Birmingham 1899 & 1898 & stamped with the initials H

creating an attractive change in colour

The theory is that this discourages running out to that side - it is rather like some ancient chariot bits

It has its original  stitched leather keeper or tongue and a fine braided leather thong with a red cord lash threaded through the loop at its end
