For the first category, cards like Experimental Synthesizer, Doomed Traveler, and Hangarback Walker are all useful candidates, though there are many more options
The best I could hope to pull from one of these packs is a Force of Will from Alliances (currently about a $150 card on eBay) or a Lion's Eye Diamond from Mirage (currently about a $70 card on eBay)
They also fit well into off-curve turnsfor example, playing a two-drop and a three-drop on turn five
